Family, Resilience, and Reinvention Spiro’s Mega Mica’s Journey

Despite numerous challenges and family tragedies, Spiro’s Mega Mica has continuously evolved, becoming one of South Africa’s largest and most beloved DIY stores. Their story began in May 1922 when Harry Spiro opened a general dealership in Durbanville. His sons, Norman, Monty and Theo grew up in the house next to the store, and after Harry’s untimely passing at the age of 49, his wife Jessie took the reins until their son Monty joined the family business in 1947.

Theo Spiro entered the store at the age of 18, bringing fresh ideas from his previous work at a family garage and car dealership. In 1962, after the unexpected death of Monty, Theo took over the business, and recognising a shift in the market, transformed the general dealership into one of the first DIY, self-service stores, focusing on household needs.

In 1983, Theo’s son, Kevin, joined the business, marking a new chapter. That same year, Spiro’s became a founding member of the Mica family, solidifying its place in the industry. The store underwent a significant rebuild in 2006, emerging as the modern and inviting store that customers know and love today. One of their latest innovations, the Solar Parking Project, offers undercover parking while harnessing solar energy to power the center.

Sadly, Kevin passed away in 2009, but the family’s resilience shone through as Steven Sollinger, Theo’s son-in-law, took over the business. In 2019, Kevin’s son, Jess, joined full-time, bringing a fourth generation into the fold, and that same year, they rebranded to Spiro’s Mega Mica, expanding their offerings to better serve the community.

Steven attributes Spiro’s ongoing success to its ability to adapt and remain relevant in a rapidly changing world. Through decades of dedication and innovation, Spiro’s Mega Mica continues to thrive, embodying the spirit of family and perseverance.
