REINVENT YOUR LIFE IN THIS CAPE COUNTRY VILLAGE

Whether you are already enjoying a country life, or have been dreaming about escaping the city to live and work in one of the Cape’s most picturesque and historical villages, this could be the opportunity you have been waiting for.

Situated only 220km from both Cape Town and George, lies Swellendam, the world’s largest youngberry producer  and third oldest magisterial district in South Africa. This small town boasts more than 50 provincial heritage sites, many historical buildings and an  enviable country lifestyle that is attracting buyers from all over.

One of its historical properties, a magnificent Old Cape house dating back to 1832, has been listed exclusively by Pam Golding Properties for R6.4 million. “The town is also a mecca for artists looking for a creative retreat and guest accommodation is always highly sought after.” Property prices have increased considerably in the past 18 months, with the average sales price in the last year hitting R1.265 million. “Swellendam enjoys excellent services, thanks to the well-run municipality, and it is fortunate to be in a rain-catchment area so water is plentiful. Just a few more reasons why people are being drawn to this area.”

Swellendam has so much to offer, says Kotze, of which its fascinating history is just one aspect. Aside from the numerous historical landmarks – including the Drostdy Museum Complex and Gaol –there is plenty to do and experience in this Overberg region. The town offers various sports activities, and has clubs for squash, tennis and swimming among others. There is also a nine-hole golf course nearby.

The Marloth Nature Reserve in the majestic Swellendam Mountains is a World Heritage Site, and also the start of the weekly 5km parkrun for runners of all fitness levels. It is one of three nature reserves in the area that offers scenic walks and trails are a delight for avid hikers and runners. With the sea just an hour away, there’s also opportunities for angling, swimming and even whale watching. The Wildebraam Berry Estate offers youngberry picking tours and the opportunity to pick your own fruit during season. The town has a vibrant artistic community and there are several galleries and pottery studios to visit.
